The City of Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department partnered again this year with the Mesquite Quilt Guild to bring the Mesquite Quilts 2008 event to the Rutherford Recreation Center. The show was held on June 20th and 21st with vendors, special exhibits and more than 125 quilts displayed.

One lucky winner walked away with a basket quilt, featuring last year’s “A Tisket, A Tasket, Oh so many Baskets” quilt-block contest blocks.

Free demonstrations were held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. both days featuring unique creations from both vendors and guild members.

Throughout the show, a silent Mini Quilt Auction was also held to auction off 80 small handmade quilts donated by Mesquite Guild members. Proceeds from the auction were donated equally to Mesquite Social Service Inc. and Sharing Life Community Outreach Inc.

Mesquite Social Services Inc., a non-profit organization, has served the Mesquite community for more than 40 years. MSS currently provides crisis relief assistance through the provision of assistance for utilities, rental/mortgage, food pantry, as well as information and referral and holiday assistance to families residing in Mesquite, Balch Springs, Sunnyvale and Seagoville.

Each year, MSS provides assistance to more than 10,000 individuals in the greater Mesquite community and has distributed over 69,000 pounds of food to families in crisis and provided Christmas gifts to over 700 area children.

Sharing Life Community Outreach Inc., also a nonprofit organization, provides benevolent support for individuals and families in crisis in Mesquite and Southeast Dallas County. SLCO’s goal is to provide basic necessities through their food pantry; clothes closet; holiday program; utility assistance; rental assistance for those facing homelessness; prescription assistance; day care assistance and many other basic but essential needs.

SLCO also offers training, educational and parenting programs to assist their clients and provide needed skills for success.

Attendees were able to enjoy a hobby they loved while helping families and individuals in need.
